My next book is The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation: it’s a Big Tech disassembly manual that explains how to disenshittify the web and bring back the old good internet. The hardcover comes from Verso on Sept 5, but the audiobook comes from me — because Amazon refuses to sell my audio:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/the-internet-con-how-to-seize-the-means-of-computation

Amazon owns Audible, the monopoly audiobook platform that controls >90% of the audio market. They require mandatory DRM for every book sold, locking those books forever to Amazon’s monopoly platform. If you break up with Amazon, you have to throw away your entire audiobook library.

That’s a hell of a lot of leverage to hand to any company, let alone a rapacious monopoly that ran a program targeting small publishers called “Project Gazelle,” where execs were ordered to attack indie publishers “the way a cheetah would pursue a sickly gazelle”:

    DRM ON FUCKING BOOKS???

The publishing industry 100% loves DRM on books. Like the publishers themselves will often insist upon it because they think it stops piracy.

    FUCK DRM!

Also, fantastic to hear Cory Doctorow’s got another book out! 😁

FYI, the Kickstarter includes your choice of audiobook, ebook, and/or hardcover copy of the new book!

You can buy DRM-free ebooks from ebooks.com. I don’t know anything about their ethics or how big a cut they take (feel free to milkshake duck them for me), but I have bought books from them just to avoid supporting Amazon and ebook DRM.

And audiobooks purchased through Libro.fm are also DRM free and a portion of the sale supports indie bookstores.

You can get a monthly subscription on Libro.fm, paying $15/mo for ebook credits that never expire, and sometimes they have sales on top of that - I got all the Murderbot Diaries novellas for like $8 each.

    image

Libro.fm takes their anti-DRM so seriously that they won’t sell books where the publisher requires it. They just put a notice on the page that the publisher’s policies conflict with their own.

    They are 👍❤️

Thanks to this post, libro.fm is now my main waterhole for audiobooks. Thank you friends!

Danny gets adopted by Bruce Wayne au but consider: Danny was brought up in a loving-if absolutely insane- household where pda and mushy gushy stuff wasn’t only said, but expected.

The bats almost never voice thier love for one another, instead showing it in a variety of different ways.

What I’m saying is that Danny keeps nearly killing them by saying “I love you.” I’m not even joking. Danny has nearly offed the bats more times in his week staying in wayne manor than any Gotham villian would dare try

Like it doesn’t even have to be an emotionally charged scene. It can literally be Danny heading out for school and telling Dick, “Love you! Bye!” And Dickie will get thrown off and take a tumble down the stairs. And this is all of them.

My first biology professor had an ‘inadequacy drawer’ full of things to remind him he wasn’t, in fact, the dumbest and laziest person to ever exist. It was mostly Darwin, notably these two bits:

    image

‘But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything.’

    image

‘I am going to write a little Book for Murray on orchids and today I hate them worse than everything.’

“I am at work on the second vol. of the Cirripedia, of which creatures I am wonderfully tired: I hate a Barnacle as no man ever did before, not even a Sailor in a slow-sailing ship.”

-Charles Darwin on a letter to his cousin

    Charles Darwin: unexpected depression hero.

I knew about “I am very poorly and very stupid and hate everybody and everything,” but not the others.

“I hate myself, I hate clover, and I hate bees” is A Mood.

My favorite Darwinism: “I am dying by inches, from not having any body to talk to about insects”.  Hits me right at the center of my hyperfixated soul.

I hate a Barnacle as no man ever did before

“The work has been turning out badly for me this morning and I am sick at heart and oh my God how I do hate species & varieties”

I have never felt comfortable with how the trans community views the Holocaust. Like it's something they want to appropriate. It is something REAL that caused suffering and death and pain to this day. I don't like how the trans community calls any woman speaking about her fears a Nazi or a fascist. That shows me you understand nothing about the true horrors of the Holocaust. You are the ones trying to silence women.

then again, take it up with Posie Parker! she’s the one who’s said she is happy to be called a nazi/white supremacist. i am simply quoting her.

I feel like anyone who feels this strongly about how people view the Holocaust would know which groups were victimized in the Holocaust. They might discover that trans people were also killed in concentration camps.

Here’s a good source for more information:

German courts have ruled that denying trans people were victims of the Holocaust is a violation of their law against denying the Holocaust.

My current favourite character in Breath of the Wild is Pikango, the incredibly shit artist who turns up around Hyrule to badly paint landscapes and hint me towards my lost memories. If you just talk to him, he seems to be this amazing and talented painter, but like if you look at the canvas

A still shot from the game. Pikango the artist is standing with his easel on display, Link to one side. Pikango is saying "Hmm. The volcano has a completely different face when viewed from this stable." In the background, the volcano of Death Mountain is visible, distant but majestic. On the easel, Pikango's picture is like a child's painting from a nursery class, complete with an erupting mushroom cloud that is not actually there above the real mountain.ALT

    I love him

Turns out someone on Reddit put together all of his paintings and the scenery they are supposed to be and it’s exactly as glorious as I’d hoped, but I just had to screenshot my favourite, which is this horse:

A side by side companion. On the right is a majestic horse, its mane flowing in the breeze. On the left is Pikango's painting, which is a giraffeALT

I love this horse I recreated it in an actual oil painting. It’s hanging in my kitchen

this is peak trans culture because this would have been easier with very nearly any other guitar design but she just haaad to use one shaped like the letter e. Not afraid of a challenge. Respect.

I would like to add that their name is E, literally just the letter E, like they’re in a spy movie. As if that wasn’t cool enough already she went and got a guitar shaped like her name. Fucking icon.
